Prior to being married to Moder, with whom she had three children—a son named Henry and twins Phinnaeus and Hazel—Roberts had romantic relationships with Dylan McDermott, Matthew Perry, Jason Patric, and Liam Neeson. Actor Kiefer Sutherland and her had a brief engagement, but it ended just a few days before their planned nuptials.

Following that, Roberts wed country music artist Lyle Lovett. Their 1993–1995 marriage lasted for two years. Roberts was rumored to have dated actor Benjamin Bratt around the time she met Moder.
