Attorneys for Renee Nicole Good’s family announced two federal civil lawsuits on October 1, alleging wrongful death and excessive force. Good, 37, was killed on January 7 near East 34th Street and Portland Avenue, just blocks from where George Floyd was murdered. She suffered gunshot wounds to her chest, arm, and head and was pronounced dead less than an hour later. Her killing prompted public anger and renewed debate over federal officers’ use of force.
One case seeks to hold the United States responsible under the Federal Tort Claims Act. The other names ICE officer Jonathan Ross, who shot Good, along with other officials. Those allegations remain claims to be addressed in court, not judicial findings. Good’s brother, Brent Ganger, described the family’s determination as a responsibility to his sister, her children, and the country. “We can and must do better,” he said, calling for decency and the rule of law.
