The U.S. Senate rejected three bills by Senator Bernie Sanders that sought to block $20 billion in arms sales to Israel. Sanders introduced the resolutions amid concerns over Israel’s military actions in Gaza, where over 43,000 people have reportedly died, and famine threatens millions.
Despite Sanders’ passionate plea against U.S. support for “mass starvation,” his S.J. Res. 111 was defeated 18-79. He criticized the Biden administration’s handling of the war, calling the U.S. “complicit” in alleged violations of international law. The bills aimed to stop military aid, including tank rounds and bomb guidance kits. Sanders argued U.S. arms sales violate the Foreign Assistance Act and Arms Export Control Act by supporting human rights violations.
