College Student Buys Meal for Homeless Man, Rewarded with Note

Casey Fischer was getting her morning coffee from Dunkin Donuts near her college campus when she noticed a homeless man nearby. He was sitting by the road, gathering any spare change. Unaware he had caught her eye, he walked into the coffee shop.

Observing the homeless man, later identified as Chris, counting his change, the college student felt compelled to approach him. Little did she know, that this encounter with a stranger would profoundly impact their lives.

 

 

“I began to get super annoying and talked to him over and over again even when he didn’t really want to talk, Casey recalled. Since he had maybe $1 in change I bought him a coffee and bagel and asked him to sit down with me, she said.

Continuing her story, she recounted the instant she chose to offer the stranger some warm food and companionship, sensing his need for it.

Casey set aside her agenda momentarily, settling beside the solitary man. Her gesture was met with warmth as Chris joined them, fostering a brief camaraderie over the modest breakfast she generously offered. As they conversed, the stranger gradually opened up, revealing his life’s journey and acknowledging the missteps that led to his current circumstances.

“He told me a lot about how people are usually very mean to him because he’s homeless, how drugs turned him into the person he hated, he lost his mom to cancer, he never knew his dad and he just wants to be someone his mom would be proud of, Casey wrote in a Facebook post.

 

 

The college student reflected, Chris was one of the most honest & sincere people I’ve ever met. Despite their impending farewell, Casey’s act of kindness towards the gentleman was about to yield an unexpected response. Chris was gearing up to express his gratitude memorably.

“After realizing I really need to get back to class, Chris asked me to wait so he can write something down for me, Casey recalled. Handing me a crumpled-up receipt, he apologized for having shaky hand writing, smiled, and left.”

Despite Chris’s apparent disclosure about his situation, Casey discerned an unspoken truth he couldn’t bring himself to share until they were parting. Yet, even then, he couldn’t verbalize it. Instead, he hastily penned it on the crumpled paper she found after their farewells.

The note read, I wanted to kill myself today, because of u I now do not. Thank you, beautiful person. Casey felt surprised yet grateful. Her simple act of kindness had saved a life. With a heart full of gratitude, the college student shared the experience on social media, touching even more lives with the power of compassion.

The inspiring story spread widely, resonating globally. It underscored our ignorance of others’ struggles and the transformative power of kindness, offering hope. Chris, in despair, found solace through Casey Fischer’s compassion. Her timely intervention averted tragedy, highlighting the significance of small gestures in saving lives.
